The major problem in English Language which has contributed to the poor performance
of students is how to cope with challenges of grammar, in general, and concord, in
particular (Mireku-Gyimah, 2008). In contemporary society, however, learning has
been rendered less stressful; thanks to the Internet and its numerous applications
(Pradeep , S, & Bhupathi , 2016). This study sought to find out the effect of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) on students’ performance in English grammar,
specifically subject-verb agreement. The study employed quasi-experimental design to
compare two groups of learners (experimental and controlled groups) in the second year level of Ningo Senior High Technical School. Cluster sampling technique was
used to select sixty (60) students from the second-year classes for this study. Each
group; the experimental and the controlled groups, was made up of thirty (30)
participants. Aptitude test and questionnaire were the main instruments used to obtained
the research data. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was the main tool used
to collate the data and perform the analysis. The results of the experimental group show
higher level of achievement than the controlled group. Also, the experimental group’s
attitude towards CALL-an online video tutorial, was positive since their interest was
aroused throughout the teaching and learning process. The study recommends that
curriculum planners integrate into the various academic disciplines the use of ICT tools
to supplement the traditional classroom teaching and learning. Again, future researchers
of this field should consider how ICT can be used to ease the teaching and learning of
other aspects of English Grammar as well as other subjects of study in senior high
schools in Ghana. |
