Abstract:
The aim of this research is to find out the difficulties faced by Senior High School learners
of Asuom Senior High School in the Kwaebibrem District in the Eastern Region as much
as conjugation of “verbes de l’ indicatif au passé composé avec l’auxilaire être” in French
as a Foreign Language (FLE). The study postulates that SHS learners have difficulties in
the choice of the auxiliary verbe and also the formation of the participe passé. They also
have difficulties in the formation of agreement between the gender and number of the
subject. Data were collected through questionnaire for the teachers and learners, with a
written test for the learners on “conjugaison des verbes de l’indicatif au passé composé”.
The analysis shows that majority of the learners had difficulties in the selection of the
auxiliary verbs thus “être or avoir”. They also find it difficult to conjugate the auxiliary
verb and form the past participle of the main verb. They always forget to form the
agreement between the gender and number of the subject. It is therefore suggested among
other remedies that different types of exercices on passé composé should be given to the
learners in the form of drills, reading of recommended text books and simple story books
in French, following French lessons on YouTube and others.
