Abstract:
This research presents difficulties learners face in the use of possessive determiners of
French as a Foreign Language in Ghana. A questionnaire was used in the investigations
and findings revealed that the causes of these difficulties are related not only to the
complex nature of the rules governing the use of possessive determiners and non-mastery
of the gender of nouns in the French Language but the difficulties also are attributed to
the linguistic transfer where students result to apply their previous knowledge in English
to written French. It has also been established that the difference between the use
possessive determiners in French language and English language compelled learners to
confuse rules in English with those in French. Proposed strategies that will help surmount
the difficulties have been suggested. At the JHS level, it has been suggested that teachers
should engage learners in regular and frequent exercises such as practical class activities
in teaching of the use of possessive determiners in the various forms. The difference in
application of rules in both English and French should be explained to the learners.
Finally, it has been proposed that teachers attend regular courses organized for teachers
of French at the Regional Centers for the teaching of French in the country as a whole
