The quality of teaching occurring in schools can be directly attributed to the
preservice teacher preparation that teachers receive. The aim of the study is to find out
challenges in the preparation of preservice music and dance teachers at Gbewaa
College of Education. Also this study is to find out the kind of instructional materials
and methods of instruction employed in the teaching and learning of music and dance.
The approach of the music and dance teachers to music and dance teaching and
learning determines the successful realization of the curriculum. A case study as a
method was employed for the study. The technique adopted for the selection was
purposive sampling. The research was based on data collected from sixty-five (65)
elective music and dance respondents out of a total of 222 students. The main
instrument used for the study was Observation, Interview and Questionnaire. The
study revealed the following: lack of competence and confidence, inadequate teaching
and learning materials, apathy on the part of students, teachers and parents,
inadequate time for music and dance lesson, lack of priority for music and the
disparity of the Curriculum content of the College of Education Institutions and that
of the Basic Schools. The results recommend that Music and Dance should be
separated from the other Creative Arts and made examinable subject at the basic level
and the course content should have a bearing on the Primary and Junior High School
syllabus. |
