Based on the observation that French as a Foreign Language (FFL) learners in Ghana in
general and learners from Ahamansu Islamic Senior High School in particular have
difficulty in producing certain French vowels, to be specific, the rounded front oral vowels:
[y], [ø] and [œ], we believe it is important to conduct a study that will enable us to discover
the origin of this problem. To do this, we conduct a comparative study of the phonological
system of French, the target language, that of english, the official and teaching language
from primary and that of tèm (kotokoli), the learners´ mother tongue, by relying on the
following theories: Contrastive analysis, Error analysis. These theories as well as the
quantitative and qualitative analysis of the questionnaire and the reading test enabled us to
face the facts of phonetics and phonological difference between the three languages that we
believe to be the cause of these difficulties. This research aims; in fact, at helping both
Ghanaian teachers and students to master the phonetic and phonology system of French by
offering several means of phonetic correction that can be applied to each error, while taking
into account the needs of each learner. |
