Earlier studies on adherence to housing laws in Ghana have massively concentrated on metropolitan and municipal assemblies. However, their findings may not be adequate for the dynamism in peri urban and urban areas of districts that are contiguous to heavily populated municipalities. This study therefore contributed to filling this gap by investigating house owners’ adherence to the Building and Zoning regulations in the peri urban and urban areas of the Gomoa East District, which is contiguous to the heavily populated Awutu Senya Municipality. Captured in four objectives, the study examined the pre- and post-building adherence level of house owners to the national Building and Zoning regulations in the district. It further examined the factors which influence house owners’ adherence to the housing laws and identified the effects that house owners’ adherence to the housing laws in the district have on the environment. Ways of improving adherence of house owners to the housing laws in the district were also explored. A quantitative approach was adopted and using a semi-structured questionnaire, data was gathered on 375 house owners who were residents in their houses in the study area. This sample size was determined through the multi-stage sampling technique. With the help of SPSS software version 22 and Stata MP 14 software, the data was analysed using descriptive statistics and the logit regression model. The results revealed that house owners’ adherence to the Building and Zoning regulations in both the pre and post building stages was low. Moreover, house owners’ ability to interpret permit, building supervision by Town and Country Planning Authourity (TCPA) during construction and having tertiary education had significant influence on the house owners’ level of adherence. It also came to light that, poor sanitation, poor street network and flooding resulted from house owners’ low level of adherence to housing law in the district. In order to bring about immediate improvement in the situation, it is recommended that house owners in the Gomoa East District endeavour to be abreast with the requirements of the Building and Zoning regulations by seeking guidance from the district’s TCPA especially during building construction to help align their building activities with the requirements of these housing laws. Yet more, there is need for an enhancement of the supervisory activities of the TCPA in both pre- and post-building of houses in the district. These done, will go a long way to improve house owners’ adherence to Building and Zoning laws and offset the negative effects that accompany breaches to the housing laws in the district.

<title>The functionality of support systems for the elderly in Gomoa East District</title>

This study sought to investigate the functionality of the support systems for the&#13;
elderly in Ghana particularly in the Gomoa East District (GED). Purposive sampling&#13;
technique was used to select the study area whereas snowball technique was adopted&#13;
for the selection of respondents for the study. In all sixty-four (64) respondents took&#13;
part in the study. Questionnaires were used to gather data. The study showed that&#13;
most of the elderly in the area are suffering from low self-esteem, lack of&#13;
opportunities they had when they were young, health challenges, poverty and&#13;
loneliness. Additionally, the study revealed that most of the support the elderly&#13;
receive comes from immediate family members as they find it difficult accessing&#13;
government support. In terms of treatment given to the elderly, the study showed that&#13;
most of the children are doing well by returning the help they got from their parents&#13;
when they were younger. However, the elderly who are unable to receive that kind of&#13;
support are compelled to work out things on their own in order to make ends meet.&#13;
From these it was therefore recommended among others that the health insurance&#13;
policy needs a review especially with the age designated for the aged. A fund be&#13;
created to help the aged in the society and also, religious bodies need to do more to&#13;
help the aged with their needs.

<title>Parenting in step-families in zongo communities in Accra</title>

This study explored parenting in step-families in selected Zongo communities in &#13;
Accra. The qualitative research methodology was employed using the phenomenology &#13;
approach. An in-depth interview was used to collect data from twenty participants &#13;
(ten step-parents and ten step-children) selected using the snow-ball technique from &#13;
purposively selected three Zongo communities. The demographic data were analysed &#13;
to generate percentages for discussion. Interviews were transcribed by a professional &#13;
transcriptionist using QSRNVIVO 9. The study revealed that the stepfamily brought &#13;
challenges and a range of benefits to the participants’ life experiences. The key &#13;
difficulties pertained to issues regarding poor-quality relationships, ineffective &#13;
communication, financial challenges, interferences from biological non-resident &#13;
parents and outsiders, emotional challenges, abuse and neglect, step-siblings rivalry &#13;
leading to conflicts and stress in step-parenting. Benefits include having an adult &#13;
person in the life of step-children, step-parents having children, and other new family &#13;
members in their lives among others. The findings also revealed separating wives and &#13;
children in polygamous step-families to different houses, dialogue with a biological &#13;
non-resident parent for collaborative parenting of step-children and step-parents &#13;
accepting that step-children already know their biological parents and would not &#13;
regard them were measures to overcome the challenges. Step-parenting comes with a &#13;
whole lot of challenges which lead to poor relationships among members affecting &#13;
healthy family living in the stepfamily. Thus, step-children should be submissive to &#13;
their step-parents. Step-children should be shown affection by step-parents, relatives, &#13;
and society so that they do not end up on the streets as junkies and criminals

This study was conducted to investigate time management practices among sandwich &#13;
students of the University of Education, Winneba. Two theories, Pareto 80/20 rule&#13;
theory and Theory of Assertiveness supported the study. Through a cross-sectional &#13;
survey method, the study used a quantitative approach to look into this phenomenon. &#13;
Simple random sampling technique (specifically lottery (yes/no) method) was used to &#13;
sample three hundred and fifty-one (351) undergraduate sandwich students from the &#13;
University of Education, Winneba. Data were collected through the use of &#13;
questionnaire. Data collected for the study were analysed using SPSS version 22 under &#13;
frequency tables, mean and standard deviation statistical tools. The study revealed that &#13;
knowledge the respondents had about time influence their time management practices. &#13;
Again, the study revealed that respondents faced challenges such as not being able to &#13;
meet deadlines and stress. It also came out that the respondents adopted strategies such&#13;
as scheduling tasks appropriately, setting priorities, taking break between tasks to &#13;
manage their challenges. Results of the study indicated that sandwich students plan the &#13;
time they spend on various activities on campus. The result proved the hypothesis that &#13;
there is a significant relationship between students’ knowledge about time and time &#13;
management practices in the University of Education, Winneba. The study recommends&#13;
time management as a general course for students or workshop on time management to &#13;
be organized for students in order for them to effectively balance the amount of time &#13;
set aside for both personal and academic interests since it will lead to the attainment of &#13;
goals.
