Amissah, G.
The purpose of selecting a life partner is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon
deeply influenced by cultural, social, economic and personal factors. The study sought
to explore the factors that influence the choice of marriage partners among the fisher
folks at Poase (New Takoradi). Specifically, the study sought to: examine the influence
of cultural values on marriage partner choice, explore the influence of occupation on
marriage partner choice, assess the role of education in marriage partner choice and
examine the role of religion in marriage partner choice. A qualitative research approach
with an exploratory descriptive design was employed for the study. Purposive sampling
technique was used to select twenty participants and data for the study was collected
using a semi-structured interview guide. The study revealed that cultural values
significantly shape partner choices, as fisherfolks often prefer partners from similar
cultural backgrounds to ensure harmony. Also, occupation and economic stability were
critical determinants, with job security influencing marital decisions. Again, education
emerged as both a transformative and moderating factor, while religion strongly guided
compatibility and family approval in marriages. Based on the findings, the study
concludes that these factors collectively sustain social cohesion and continuity among
fisherfolks at Poase. Implications of the findings suggest that policies aimed at
preserving cultural values, improving occupational stability, expanding access to
education and reinforcing positive religious practices can enhance marriage stability
and community well-being. Recommendations include empowering fisherfolks
economically through microfinance and training, strengthening educational outreach
and fostering dialogue between cultural and religious leaders to harmonise traditional
values with modern realities.

Osei, E.
The study was conducted to examine the effects of marital conflicts on children’s
upbringing in the New Abirem community in the Birim North District in the Eastern
Region of Ghana. The design adopted for the study was a cross-sectional survey and
qualitative research approach. A total sample of twelve (10) participants were selected
for the study using the purposive sampling technique. Interview guide was the main
tool used for the collection of data. The data was analysed qualitatively. The study,
found that the major causes of marital conflicts were financial issues, infidelity,
infertility, sexual issues, religious differences, and lack of trust among partners. It was
also found that marital conflicts affected the upbringing of children. For instance, it
creates an interaction problem for children and communication gap between children
and their parents. Again, the study exhibited that married couples should seek help for
conflict resolution from marriage counsellors and extended family members in order
not for their feud to spill over to the children and affect their upbringing. The study
recommends among other things that, married couples should focus on the welfare of
their children and see to it that all necessary provisions needed for their upbringing are
provided irrespective of the ensuing conflicts among them.

Marmon-Halm, D.
The study explored pre-service Social Studies teachers’ appreciation of shared indigenous
Ghanaian cultural values focusing on University of Education Winneba, (UEW). The study
was guided by the modernisation and decolonialisation theories and Cultural Epistemicide
was the discursive. Sequential explanatory mixed method design was used to guide the
conduct of this study. The population comprised the Social Studies students in the
Department of Social Studies Education, UEW. However, the Level 300 Social Studies
students constituted the accessible population, of which 300 of them formed the sample
size. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) chart on the determination of sample size, was employed
to determine the sample size for the study. The study data was collected with the aid of a
questionnaire and an interview guide. The statistical methods used in the analysis included
frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that the Social
Studies teachers have adequate knowledge of the core indigenous Ghanaian cultural
values, a high appreciation of indigenous Ghanaian cultural values. The study further
disclosed that the participants agree to the inhibitors to the appreciation of Ghanaian
cultural values. The respondents indicated ways in which indigenous Ghanaian cultural
value appreciation could be promoted. It was, therefore, recommended that Social Studies
teachers should continue to adopt Ghanaian cultural values in the explanation of concepts
in Social Studies to make their students learn to appreciate our values the more.

Social protection a study of child protection in Winneba township
Benewaa, B.
The challenges facing children in the 21st century are as immense as challenges facing
adults. Social protection of children is therefore important for the overall wellbeing of
children. Despite the existence of child rights laws and institutions, social protection of
children in Winneba Township remains inadequate, necessitating an exploration of the
implementation gaps and challenges to inform effective solutions and as such, this study
seeks to bridge this gap. The purpose of the study was to explore the social protection
measures in place for children in the Winneba Township. The interpretivist paradigm
was adopted for the study. The research approach was qualitative while the descriptive
case study design was adopted. The study sampled 30 participants using purposive and
convenience sampling procedures. Data were collected using semi-structured interview
guide and a focus group discussion guide. The data were analysed using thematic
analysis. The results showed that social protection of children was perceived by the
participants as involving identifying and intervening to end abuse of children, and
protection of children’s rights. It was also revealed that the social protection measures
available in Winneba involved rescuing abused children and putting them in recovery,
providing child maintenance and support for parents, and educating the public on child
rights. Further, the study showed that social protection measures were deployed in
Winneba through mechanisms such as investigation and mediation, collaboration and
public sensitisation. Additionally, it was found that the main challenges hindering the
social protection of children were finance, tradition or culture, institutional politics and
knowledge of child rights. Finally, the study revealed that community awareness and
sensitization, collaboration, funding and provision of resources, and education of
stakeholders were factors which can enhance the social protection of children in
Winneba. It was recommended that clubs should be formed by schools to ensure
children learn about their rights and responsibilities, effective collaboration between
actors should be encouraged and an improved budgetary allocation for child protection
actors. This can help the agencies get the funding and resources needed to sufficiently
ensure the social protection of children.
